Two Countertenors:

An evening of 18th and 20th Century Song

Michael Chance has established a worldwide reputation as one of the foremost exponents of the male alto voice in all areas of the classical repertoire. He has performed in the world’s major opera houses and concert halls, and has made many recordings, including winning a Grammy award for Handel’s Semele. He is a visiting Professor at the Royal College of Music. He was featured in The South Bank Show in 1999.

Derek Lee Ragin is one of the foremost countertenors of our era. Born in the USA, he now lives in the UK, and has performed in numerous countries, from the Metropolitan Opera in New York to the Salzburg Festival. He lent his voice to Farinelli, the film about the famed 18th century castrato, which won a Golden Globe award in 1995.

Maggie Cole is best known in Britain through her numerous recitals on BBC Radio 3, and appearances at leading festivals. She has performed from Seattle to Moscow, Finland to India, and has made many recordings. She plays with Trio Goya and the Sarasa Ensemble, and takes performances into unconventional spaces such as hospitals and prisons.

Jennifer Morsches was the recipient of the Ernst Wallfisch Memorial Prize in music in 1990, and has since worked with leading English ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the English Baroque Soloists and Florilegium. She has given world premieres of pieces by a number of composers and performed live on BBC Radio.

Alastair Boag is the Director of the Stahl Theatre, Oundle, where he recently directed Britten’s Noye’s Fludde. He has directed nine productions for Opera East, and as an actor he has appeared at the Cambridge Arts Theatre and in the films Peter Warlock and The Listening.

Programme

The programme will include in the first half, songs by Handel, Purcell, and John Dowland , accompanied on harpsichord, and in the second half, songs by George Gershwin, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten and Reynaldo Hahn, accompanied on piano. The songs will be interspersed by Alastair Boag’s entertaining introduction to the history of the countertenor.
